Sciatica Treatment from Our St. Paul Chiropractor

Sciatica is a medical condition that causes pain to radiate along the lower back, buttocks, and legs. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, supplying sensation to the lower legs and feet. This nerve connects to the lower portion of the spinal cord, affecting the lower torso of the body. Like any other nerve, the sciatic nerve is susceptible to disease, injury, and conditions like sciatica.

Man with sciatica pain needs chiropractic care.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatic nerve pain can cover the lower back, leg, buttocks, and even feet. Searing pain, dull aching, numbness, tingling, and weakness are common symptoms of this condition. People over the age of 40 are at a higher risk of developing sciatica. If you consistently experience any of these symptoms, pay a visit to your doctor or chiropractor.

Common Causes of Sciatica

Spinal disc herniation is a common cause of sciatic nerve pain. In disc herniation, a spinal disc falls out of its place, leading to compression and pain of nearby nerve roots. Piriformis syndrome is a condition wherein the piriformis muscle pinches the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can also be caused by lumbar spinal stenosis or the narrowing of the spinal canal. Pregnancy is also strongly associated with sciatica; during pregnancy, the weight of the fetus may press onto the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is sometimes spurred on by physical trauma such as a car accident or sports injury. In rarer cases, sciatica is caused by spinal tumors along the lower back.

Treatment for Sciatica

While sciatica is rarely life-threatening, it can be extremely painful. Doctors recommend that those with sciatica seek treatment in order to avoid a lower quality of life.

Sciatica is often detected through physical examination, during which the patient might discuss symptoms and history with the doctor. MRIs and CT scans have been used to reach to diagnose this condition. Once a diagnosis is made, the next step is finding an appropriate plan for sciatica management. Spinal manipulation is a safe and effective chiropractic treatment for sciatica.
